03 February 2025

(ANS – Rome) – Last Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Salesian Central Headquarters, the event "Education, Hope, Joy: The Legacy of Saint John Bosco for the New Generations" took place. This celebration of Saint John Bosco, organized by the DON BOSCO NEL MONDO (Don Bosco in the World) Foundation, gathered benefactors, Salesians, and friends of the Congregation. The event was held in honor of the feast of the Saint of Youth, which occurs on January 31.

The gathering served as a celebration of the richness and vitality of the Salesian charism, attended by benefactors, members of the General Council, Ambassadors, and friends of Don Bosco. From its very title, the event was dedicated to a triad representing Don Bosco’s message and its relevance today: "Education, Hope, Joy: The Legacy of Saint John Bosco for the New Generations."

Moreover, the event was organized to provide an opportunity to share the work of the Foundation and the Salesian Congregation in supporting the most vulnerable young people worldwide.

More than 60 donors of the Foundation, friends and supporters of the Salesians, members of the Congregation’s General Council, as well as representatives of various embassies, participated in the meeting. Among them were Carlos Alberto Fonseca, Ambassador of Angola to the Holy See; Minister Mirko Soto Sapriza from the Embassy of the Republic of Paraguay; Monsignor Fernando Silva de Matos, Ecclesiastical Counselor representing the Embassy of Portugal to the Holy See; Ms. Francisca Menezes, First Secretary of the Embassy of East Timor; and Ms. Marie Guerlyne Janvier, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Haiti to the Holy See.

"Welcome to the house of the Salesians, the home of all Don Bosco’s friends," said Fr. Rafael Bejarano Rivera SDB, Head of Social Works in the Youth Ministry Sector and moderator of the event, as he opened the meeting.

After the official greetings by Br. Alberto Rodríguez Mármol SDB, President of the DON BOSCO NEL MONDO Foundation, Br. Jean Paul Muller SDB, Economer General of the Salesian Congregation and Treasurer of the Foundation, took the floor: "Don Bosco and all those from the founding period of the Salesians lived in times of change, and we too are going through many turning points today," Muller told those present. "Our response is to strengthen and support the Church in facing the many challenges of today and alleviating the dramatic consequences for the poor. We strive, wherever possible, to fulfill Don Bosco’s desire for a strong Church that serves everyone."

Benefactor and writer Cristina Palumbo Crocco then shared her testimony: "I am very grateful to be here today," she said in her speech, "and I want to take this opportunity to emphasize how every Salesian mission in the world resembles all the others, regardless of the initial conditions of the territory: it is a sign of great dignity."

Next, on behalf of the Youth Ministry department, Fr. José Lorbeth Vivo SDB presented the "Hidden Diamonds" project, which has also been turned into a book. Finally, two higher secondary students from the Salesian School Institute Pio XI shared their participation in the "Dream Yourself Big" contest, currently ongoing and organized by the Foundation.

The entire event was accompanied by "Le Voci del Sacro Cuore" (Voices of the Sacred Heart), the choir of girls from the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Rome. Two of their performances, "Hallelujah" and "Giullare dei Campi" (Jester of the fileds), dedicated to Don Bosco, are available on the DON BOSCO NEL MONDO Foundation's Instagram channel.
