02 January 2025

(ANS – Tirupattur) – The second day of the South Asian Salesian Youth Movement Fest (SYMFEST) in Tirupattur, Tamil Nadu, India, on December 30, 2024, was an enriching and dynamic experience designed to inspire, reflect, and celebrate the values of youth engagement, environmental responsibility, and interfaith harmony. The participants engaged in meaningful discussions, interactive sessions, and vibrant celebrations, each contributing uniquely to the day’s themes.

The day began with a session on “Social Media: The Magic, The Logic, and The Tragic” by Father Ernest Rosario SDB. This insightful address explored the complexities of social media’s role in modern society, highlighting its transformative potential and challenges. Father Ernest spoke about social media’s ability to connect people and ideas while addressing its pitfalls, such as misinformation and digital dependency, offering a balanced perspective on navigating the online world.

The programme continued with a thought-provoking session led by Father Patrick Antonyraj SDB, Secretary to the Vicar of the Rector Major in Rome. Father Patrick reflected on “SYM – The Past, The Present, and The Future,” examining the journey of the Salesian Youth Movement and its evolving role in shaping young lives. He also discussed “SYM Profile - My Choice and My Responsibility,” urging participants to take ownership of their roles in the movement and their communities. The session delved into the vision of SYMSYNOD, inspiring youth to contribute meaningfully to the Church and society.

Dr. Sultan A. Ismail, Scientist, and Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission member, led a Youth and Integral Ecology session. Dr. Ismail shared his expertise on fostering ecological sustainability, emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic issues. He inspired the youth to engage in responsible actions for the betterment of the planet. Participants later enjoyed recreation and friendly competitions, which provided an opportunity to unwind and strengthen bonds.

In the afternoon, the session ‘My Dream for My Country’ provided a platform for speakers to share their visions for a better India. Father John Parankimalil SDB delivered the English address, passionately emphasizing the importance of faith and hope in nation-building. The Tamil session featured Mr. John Louis, IAS, and Mrs. Sharmila Louis, Advocate, who discussed governance, law, and education’s critical roles in shaping the nation’s future. Their reflections called on each individual to contribute positively to India’s growth.

The event transitioned into a powerful Praise and Worship session led by SYM INB, INN, and INC. This session offered spiritual renewal, with moments of confession, prayer, and collective worship, fostering unity and devotion among the group. For those seeking guidance, the participants had counseling opportunities through Niraivagam, Don Bosco Institute of Psychological Services.

The highlight of the evening was the Holy Mass, celebrated by Most Rev. Dr. Ambrose Pitchaimuthu DD, Bishop of Vellore. It was a solemn occasion marked by prayers for attendees and members of other religions, promoting interfaith dialogue and mutual respect. In his homily, Bishop Ambrose emphasized the transformative power of faith and hope, particularly in the lives of young people. He highlighted their role as change agents in society and nation-building, urging them to immerse themselves in scripture, act with courage, challenge injustices, and foster hope. He encouraged inclusivity, dreaming big, and being the change they wish to see while emphasizing joy and trust in God’s plan.

The day maintained its vibrant energy as participants moved to Don Bosco Matriculation School for the final event of the evening: the grand Christmas Cantata—Sound and Light Programme on Christmas. This spectacular performance blended music, lights, and narration to bring the Christmas story to life. Many young people appreciated the presentation and thanked the performers for their efforts.
