Venezuela – A celebration of faith and community: the 130 years of Salesian presence in Venezuela

(ANS – Caracas) – More than a thousand people gathered on 16 November to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the arrival of the Salesians in Venezuela. The day began in the Don Bosco Church in Altamira, where the Salesian community paid a moving tribute to the Salesians who were pillars in establishing the Province. This event was an opportunity to pray and thank God for the first seven Salesians who arrived in the country, as well as to honour the memory of recently deceased Salesians.

After this moving ceremony, a procession headed towards Plaza Amador Bendayán. The Salesian Community of Sarria organised a procession, accompanied by different groups of the Salesian Family and animated by the Francisco de Miranda Band, which enlivened those present with its music and dances.

Arriving at the Saint Francis de Sales School, the young people of the Ministry of Christ the King of Judibana presented an extraordinary show that moved all those present. Through an artistic representation with dances and music, the young people recounted the 130 years of Salesian presence in Venezuela.

The celebration continued with the Eucharist presided over by Archbishop Raúl Biord Castillo, SDB, Archbishop of Caracas. In his homily, Archbishop Biord stressed the importance of "remembering and being a prophecy in these difficult times for Venezuela". At the end of the Mass, the awards were given to the Rectors of communities, members of the Salesian Family, friends and benefactors, who represent a sign of hope for the Province.

The celebration continued with various artistic and cultural presentations. Salesians in Initial Formation are called to continue the dream of John Bosco and to inspire other young people to follow Christ in the Salesian style. The celebration ended with the words of the Superior of the Salesian St Luke Province, Fr Rafael Montenegro, who invited everyone to continue building, educating and evangelising in Salesian settings, with the challenge of continuing the mission that has been inherited.

This celebration not only honoured the history and legacy of the Salesians in Venezuela, but was also a call to hope and perseverance in the mission of educating and evangelising future generations.
