Italy – Ongoing Restorations at Valdocco: Work on the Bell Towers and Statues to Restore Their Former Glory

08 November 2024

(ANS – Turin) – Visitors to the Salesian Motherhouse in Turin-Valdocco over recent weeks will have noticed significant construction works underway. Most notably, the square in front of the basilica is undergoing renovations. Additionally, scaffolding indicates restoration work on both towers and the basilica roof. There was an urgent need to stabilize the two bell towers and, especially, to almost completely renew the statues of the Virgin Mary and two angels, as corrosion from exhaust gases and weather had severely damaged some statues.

Experts are now working to restore these statues to their original splendor, so they can once again welcome visitors from atop the roofs of Turin.

In the courtyard of Valdocco, one can currently observe the restorers at work, notice the severe rust stains, and watch as new, bright surfaces are created.

This costly work has been made possible partly due to generous donations from individuals and a Turin-based foundation. While the funds collected are not yet sufficient to cover all expenses, Divine Providence has thus far always helped maintain the Basilica as a place of prayer and community.
