Slovenia – A record of service to young people, families and the Church: 308 summer oratories

07 October 2024

(AND – Lubljana) – In 2020 when almost all youth and pastoral programs were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, youth organisations were very concerned. "With the interruption of the projects and the decrease in the number of both children and young participants, will we still be able to reactivate enough volunteers to carry out more demanding projects, such as the summer oratory?" asked Salesian Cooperator Tilen Mlakar, Secretary of the Oratorij Slovenija Association, from the Youth Ministry Sector of the Sts Cyril and Methodius Province of Slovenia (SLO), which coordinates the oratory activities of the Oratorij Slovenija project. But the answer was crystal clear: this summer showed that concern about the oratories was fortunately unfounded.

Every year the Oratorij Slovenija association prepares and assists the summer oratory programs throughout Slovenia, preapring thousands of boys and girls so that during the summer, following the style of Don Bosco, they can accompany the little ones on paths of growth and play. This is a service that the association, under the direction of SLO's Salesian Youth Ministry Office, offers not only to the Salesian Family's works and centres, but to numerous other parishes and Christian situations throughout the country.

Now, at the beginning of autumn, it has been possible to make precise assessments of what was achieved in the summer just ended, and Mr. Mlakar can say with satisfaction: "We are pleased to observe that the number of summer oratories in the parishes and youth centres in Slovenia in 2024 exceeded the number in 2019, before the pandemic."

Throughout the country, in fact, thanks to the commitment of the Oratorij Slovenija association, as many as 308 summer oratories were held, lasting from one to four weeks. The activities were carried out by about 7,400 young volunteer leaders and allowed the participation of over 24,600 children and young people.

“These are important numbers we can be proud of. But we are even more proud of all the valuable experiences, new skills, deepened friendships, responsibilities accepted, efforts, time invested and countless smiles that the summer oratory has made possible. No statistics and no photographs can capture it. It is something more, that thousands of young people have given to themselves and to the participants through their commitment and their decision to do something good"  Mr. Mlakar said.
