Italy – Conclusion of the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Don Bosco Alumni: The Confederation Embraces the Future and Revitalizes its Mission Among Young People

07 October 2024

(ANS – Turin) – On October 5, 2024, the fourth day of their extraordinary general assembly, the 200 delegates of the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Don Bosco Past Pupils Association, visited the places associated with Don Bosco on Saturday. They visited Chieri and Colle Don Bosco from where Don Bosco himself had envisioned the future. On the last day, the elections for the new office bearers and the final concluding ceremony took place.

At Chieri, the delegates visited the sites where young Johnny Bosco received his education, and at Colle Don Bosco, they had a chance to visit the exact birth place of the Saint and the fields where he laboured as a child.

On Sunday, October 6, the assembly sessions concluded with regional meetings (according to the world-wide divisions of Asia, Africa, America, and Europe with the Middle East continents) and the provisional approval of resolutions proposed by the coordinators of the various groups.

"The Extraordinary General Assembly (L’Assemblea Generale Straordinaria Mondiale  - EGWA) offered a unique opportunity for the Don Bosco Alumni and Friends to engage in a deep and meaningful synodal process. By listening, reflecting, and collaborating," emphasized Bryan Magro, the World President of the Confederation, "we can strengthen our commitment to the Salesian mission and better serve the needs of young people."

Several key points were highlighted for alumni around the world: the need to translate synodality into concrete action, fostering a synodal approach by walking together to strengthen the mission with young people through deep listening, which is the essence of synodality; reconnecting with the heritage by embracing the mission; focusing on the holistic development of individuals, as the Alumni’s mission is centered on youth; emphasizing discernment as a cornerstone of the synodal journey; responding to the cry of disadvantaged youth; and adopting a pastoral care approach to address emerging forms of poverty.

"By doing this," President Magro highlighted, "we can create a more vibrant, inclusive, and effective way for our mission as Alumni and be the salt of the earth and the light of the world."

Other approved resolutions include the "Valdocco option," frequently mentioned by Pope Francis, to remain close to the most needy youth; the involvement of young Alumni in the association; communication and digitalization; the sharing of best practices; the establishment of a secretariat for the World Confederation; and the promotion of mentoring among the Alumni.

After the concluding prayer by Fr. Joan Lluís Playà, Central Delegate of the Rector Major for the Secretariat of the Salesian Family, President Magro officially declared the work of the Extraordinary General Assembly closed, followed by the traditional fraternal agape.
