An important opportunity for reflection and sharing that marked the beginning of the new pastoral year 2024-25, inspired by the SYM Proposal "Awaited by his love. Joyful in Hope" and to the upcoming Jubilee events and the 150th anniversary of the first Salesian mission.
The conference began with the initial greetings of the Delegate for Youth Ministry, Fr Giuseppe Russo, and the EMI Provincial, Fr Gianpaolo Roma, who introduced the first talk by Fr Andrea Lonardo, from the diocese of Rome.
"Hope is either great or useless": with these direct words Fr Lonardo began his theological-catechetical introduction to the theme of Christian hope, urging the participants to recognise, cultivate and make known both "small hope" and "great hope". He stressed that true hope is one that "touches everyone and lasts forever," an invitation to witness what is true and good in a world often marked by mistrust.
On the second day, Fr Enrico Ponte, SDB and Director of Novices, addressed a crucial and current theme: "Generation Z, hope and vocation". His reflection highlighted how hope consists in knowing how to see the presence of Jesus in the young man in front of us, recognizing in his wound the promise of a better future. Where young people say they feel more "cold inside", is the place where they can meet and encounter God.
In addition to the main talks, the conference offered moments of active involvement. The second phase of the event was enriched by the testimonies of three Educative and Pastoral Communities (EPCs), which shared their best practices in the vocational accompaniment of young people, education, the formation of Salesian Cooperators and in the journey towards consecrated life.
Finally, the last morning was dedicated to the Province's planning for the new year: vision, actions and measurement indicators were presented by the people in charge of each environment and animation sector.
In the closing address the Provincial, Fr Gianpaolo Roma, shared his final report with his confreres and the laity, inviting the entire provincial community to live a new beginning with hope and commitment, remembering that Christian hope is not a simple wish, but a certainty rooted in the fidelity of God. Finally, he highlighted the urgency of renewing communities through courageous choices, such as the re-signification of the mission, calling everyone to build together a brighter future, open to change and spiritual growth.
