The morning session began with an inspiring theme introduced by Fr Joebeth: “Let us be part of the dream.” He shared a compelling message about the influence of our environments and the people who shape us. Reflecting on Don Bosco’s own life, Fr. Joebeth emphasised how Don Bosco, despite enduring much suffering in his youth, transformed his hardships into a positive force. Instead of being crushed by adversity, Don Bosco chose to be a “constructive producer,” relying wholly on God to guide his mission. This theme resonated deeply with the participants, urging them to view their own challenges as opportunities for growth and service.
Fr Francisco, representing the Youth Ministry Sector, then introduced the official website of the Synod, www.sys2024.org, and encouraged participants to utilise the resources available not only during the Synod but also later. He invited them to organise events that would engage and inspire young people in their regions, extending the Synod’s impact far beyond its immediate gathering.
Following this, Fr Francisco led the youth in a reflective prayer session based on the Gospel passage of the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). Participants grouped into threes for an “Emmaus walk,” during which they reflected on the gospel and shared personal experiences of feeling God’s presence in their lives, as well as moments of doubt. This exercise fostered deep spiritual connections among the participants, encouraging them to support each other in their faith journeys.
After the morning session, the delegates embarked on guided tours of Colle Don Bosco, visiting significant sites such as Don Bosco’s childhood home and the majestic Basilica. For many, this was their first visit to Colle, and standing in the very place where Don Bosco was born and raised deeply moved them. This experience allowed them to connect more intimately with the life of Don Bosco and the dream that has continued to inspire generations.
In the afternoon, Fr Joebeth urged the delegates to diligently study the “Instrumentum Laboris” to fully engage in the Synod’s discussions. He reminded them to keep a global perspective, considering the realities of all young people worldwide, not just those in their immediate surroundings. He also shared that the Synod’s final output would include five documents, one in each major language represented, to honour the unique cultural nuances of each language group.
The participants then devoted time to reading and reflecting on the working document, in small groups. These groups, consist of about ten participants each, facilitated in-depth dialogue with the help of a moderator and presenter. The summaries from these discussions would later be presented during the general assembly, ensuring that all voices were heard.
Meanwhile, the SDB (Salesians of Don Bosco) and (Daughters of Mary Help of Christians) gathered separately to begin crafting a decalogue—ten guiding principles—on how to effectively accompany young people in realizing their dreams. This process began with a synthesis of responses from the Province Youth Ministry teams worldwide, focusing on concrete actions that could be taken to support youth. In small groups, the SDB and FMA identified the two most crucial points, which were then shared in larger assemblies. These insights would eventually be distilled into a comprehensive decalogue, providing a clear framework for future Salesian youth work.
The day concluded with a beautiful rosary prayed in the courtyard, with the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians as a stunning backdrop. A reenactment of Don Bosco’s dream of the rosary and the serpent served as a powerful reminder of the importance of prayer, especially the rosary, in overcoming temptation. The missionary rosary was prayed in five languages, each decade introduced with a short reading from different episodes in Don Bosco’s life. Participants were invited to pray for various groups of young people around the world, particularly those facing difficult circumstances.
Fr. Thati, Rector of Colle Don Bosco, ended the day with a heartfelt “Good Night” message, sharing the history of the Salesian presence at Colle Don Bosco, which began in 1918. He likened Don Bosco’s dream at nine to the Annunciation, highlighting the shared experience of fear and uncertainty in responding to God’s call. Yet, like Mary, Don Bosco had faith that with God, all things are possible. He further encouraged the young people to seek Don Bosco’s intercession, asking him to bless their dreams and guide them toward bringing those dreams to life. At the end of the day, the participants soulfully sang and danced to Don Bosco songs, expressing their deep love and admiration for him.
As the second day of the Salesian Youth Synod 2024 drew to a close, the participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper connection to the Salesian mission. Surrounded by the very landscape that shaped Don Bosco’s vision, they were inspired to carry forward his dream, confident that with faith and determination, they too could make a lasting impact on the world.
