France – A training institute for nurses is established on the Don Bosco campus in Lyon

17 June 2024

(ANS – Lyon) – This is a first for the network of Salesian institutes throughout the St Francis de Sales Province of France – South Belgium (FRB): a nursing training institute (IFSI, in French) will open its doors in Lyon in September, welcoming its first class of 15 students.

Let's take a close look at the Don Bosco health and social care campus, the only one of its kind in France.

"Our goal is not to create yet another training institute, but to offer training suitable for young people and that meets their needs" explained Jean-Michel Mari, General Director of the Don Bosco’ campus in Lyon. "We will propose agile models that respond to the aspirations of learners, professionals and local communities."

Aware of the dropout rate of students and the shortage of nursing staff, the Don Bosco network of Salesian educational institutions in France and Belgium South wants to do its part by offering a comprehensive training program. "The creation of IFSI is part of a broader process of creating a health and social campus, whose model is unique in France" continued Dr. Mari.

This model is based on de-compartmentalisation: training, that is, is seen as part of a system that combines theory and practice, and will be combined with a didactic approach based on learning skills, professional position and commitment. Another pillar of the training will be personalised and tailored support for students.

All of this will complement the training of healthcare assistants and paramedics. The Don Bosco campus will therefore issue eight different types of professional qualifications recognised by the State, with agreements with two universities.

The Don Bosco campus in Lyon also aims to be a place of innovation through the exchange of opinions and practices between all the actors involved. Thanks to the collaboration with the Ramsay Pôle – Lyon group, IFSI will have its headquarters and training in six facilities in the regions of Lyon and Beaujolais (Lyon, Écully, Saint-Priest, Villeurbanne, Marcy-l'Étoile and Arnas). Working closely with local authorities, professionals and trainees from the social care and health world, this new course aims to address the shortage of doctors and health personnel, and to prepare a new generation of health professionals able to respond to the challenges of the professional world.
