Peru – Eucharistic Celebration in the "Sagrario": a tribute to the Salesian legacy

22 April 2024

(ANS – Lima) – The "El Sagrario" parish of the Cathedral in Lima has opened its doors to the Salesian Family to celebrate two extraordinary sons of Don Bosco who have made their way to holiness in Peru: the Venerable Octavio Ortiz Arrieta (Lima, 1878 - Chachapoyas, 1958) and the Servant of God Luis (Luigi) Bolla (Schio, 1932 - Lima, 2013).

The Eucharist was presided over by Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General of the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family, and concelebrated by several other Salesians, including Fr Gabriel Cruz, Worldwide Spiritual Animator of the Association of Mary Help of Christians (ADMA) and his collaborator in the Postulation; Fr.Sandro Carbone, parish priest of El Sagrario; together with other priests, Salesians and others.

During the homily, Fr Cameroni expressed his gratitude to all those present and, in a brief review, highlighted the figures of Fr Bolla and Bishop Ortiz Arrieta. Speaking of the latter, the Postulator General recalled how he was the first Peruvian Salesian and then bishop of Chachapoyas, and called him "a great Salesian dedicated to his mission, with a deep missionary spirit".

In another moment, he stressed the importance of the evangelising figure of Fr Bolla, presenting him as a reference model. "I invite you to learn more about these people who have embodied, each in their own way, the charism of Don Bosco", he concluded.

Before the end of the Eucharist, Fr Carbone expressed his gratitude to all the Salesians present, underlining in particular the participation of Fr Cameroni. "Here we have two footprint models of Don Bosco and Jesus. We are united as good children of God in devotion to the Virgin Mary" he said.

The celebration was followed by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque with a sculptural artistic relief in homage to Bishop Ortiz Arrieta, who was baptised there in 1878.
