"Thanks to this quality training as beauticians, hairdressers, seamstresses, cooks and in the hotel disciplines, young women have access to the labour market and get the opportunity to generate their own income, for the benefit of them, their families and their communities", explains Virginia Martín Lorenzo, technician of the Salesian Bosco Global NGO for development responsible for the project.
She then adds: "Links will be established with local companies and employers, which will facilitate the integration of young graduates into the labour market, creating a bridge between training and employment."
The specific objectives of the project include:
– Improving women's access to the world of work in the Koumassi district;
– Respond to the needs of the neighbourhood and other neighbouring areas in terms of high levels of illiteracy;
– Offer educational and leisure alternatives to girls who do not attend school;
– Respond to the request of families in the area who ask for quality education, but in many cases, being poor, they cannot access it.
The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians settled in Koumassi in October 1993 to respond to Bishop Akichi's call to promote the educational support and human promotion of a large number of girls in situations of social exclusion.
In 1995, a socio-educational complex for young people was built and opened, which includes a Centre for the Promotion of Women and Vocational Training and a Youth Centre with various socio-cultural and sports activities.
In short, the project of the Salesian Bosco Global NGO for development called "Guaranteeing access to the labour market through vocational training for young women at the ‘Marie Dominique’ centre in the district of Koumassi, Abidjan (Ivory Coast)" aims to respond to the needs of girls who seek to improve their skills and living conditions, and children in general.
