RMG - Appointment of the New Superior of the Vice Province of Malta

(ANS - Rome) - During the winter plenary session of the General Council, Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, with the consent of the members of his Council, has appointed Fr Eric Cachia, Superior of the Salesian Vice Province "Mary Help of Christians" in Malta (MLT) for the six-year period of 2024-2030.

Born in Pietà Zebbug, Malta, on 4 August 1976, Fr Cachia did his novitiate in Italy, in Lanuvio, between 1995 and 1996. He made his first profession on 8 September 1996 in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Rome and his perpetual profession on 29 August 2003 in Quormi, Malta. He was then ordained a priest on 21 July 2005 in Valletta.

He served as the Economer in the 'St Alphonsus' house in Sliema, from 2005 to 2011; then in Dingli, as Principal and Vicar, from 2012 to 2017. Since 2017, he has been serving in the 'St Patrick' work in Sliema, where he is currently Rector of the Community and the Headmaster.

At the province level, from 2006 to 2008 he was the Councillor of the then Delegation of Malta (within the Province of Ireland) and Delegate for Youth Ministry.

From 2008 to 2018 he was the Economer of the Malta Delegation and since 2018 he has been the Economer of the Vice province of Malta.

Fr Cachia will thus become the second MLT Superior and will succeed the current Superior of the Vice province, Fr Paul Formosa, whose term of office will conclude on 15 August 2024.
