Italy - At the service of the 'breath of the Spirit': the circle of holiness in the Salesian Family

10 September 2023

(ANS - Turin) – It was the time to synthesize, to renew communion among all and, finally, to cultivate the passion for what, it was reaffirmed, as a true ministry: this was the crux of the last session of the seminar for the promotion of the Causes of Beatification and Canonization of the Salesian Family, which ended on the morning of Sunday 10 September 2023. A session that also saw the continuous presence of the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, who did not miss the opportunity to encourage the holiness of the Family of Don Bosco to emerge: "We must ensure that what we have goes on, because they are not our own things," he said. "We are at the service of the breath of the Spirit, and we must help to make feel this breath.

The morning had first opened with the community celebration of the Sunday Eucharist in the basilica of Mary Help of Christians (https://fb.watch/mZazAWZRdD/), in which the Rector Major, with reference to the day's readings, had delivered three key messages: to love one's neighbour as a synthesis of all the commandments; to avoid gossip as the first form of charity; mutual prayer as an expression of authentic charity between brothers and sisters.

Then, in the last moment of discussion in the hall, Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, the Postulator General for the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family, gave a brief update on the work carried out by the General Postulation since the previous seminar (with 7 enquiries closed, 5 open, 6 positio delivered, just to mention a few figures). Above all, he renewed the invitation to all those present to conceive their service of animation in an organic and comprehensive manner, weaving synergies and collaboration at all levels. There was also no lack of suggestions on the steps to be taken to foster knowledge of holiness, the spread of devotions, and ultimately, the promotion of the Causes.

Because of the uniqueness and significance of this experience, the presentation of the collection of the Peruvian Historical Archives on the Servant of God Fr. Luigi Bolla, SDB, also found its place in the last session of the work. The work of collecting the extraordinary documentation on the life of the Salesian, who spent his entire missionary life (60 years) among the indigenous Achuar and Schuar people of Ecuador and Peru, took place in agreement with those communities and required the commitment of dedicated and highly qualified personnel, but in the end it put together an extraordinary documentary heritage, both to learn about the life of the Servant of God, and at an ethnographic level in relation to the indigenous peoples: 25 series of exhibits, with documents of all kinds, dozens of diaries, maps, photographs, postcards .... and Fr Bolla's personal objects, such as his tawásap, the feather crown symbolizing his status with the Achuar; or his boots, still containing the mud of the Amazon Rainforest he travelled through.

The concluding words were spoken "off the cuff" by the 10th Successor of Don Bosco. Touched by the speeches he had attended in the previous days and by the reports he had read, he wished to recount through his direct testimony how touching, alive and true Salesian holiness is throughout the world: “In my animation visit  to 118 countries around the world I have experienced beautiful realities in the recent years: I have been able to see what you have spoken of by seeing it in the field: I have directly known the story of the Spanish martyrs of the Civil War; I have admired the story of Fr Vincenzo Cimatti through his beautiful museum in Japan; I can tell you about the Cause of Fr Silvio Galli in Chiari or of Fr Bolla himself in Peru; I have been beside the Ferrandine Sisters in the difficult moments of slowing down in the Cause of their founder, and I have rejoiced with the Salesian Oblates of the Sacred Heart when the Cause of Mons. Giuseppe Cognata once again took of...”.

After praising the high-level of lectures and the quality materials found throughout the seminar, the Rector Major, on the one hand warned against the danger of "our laziness and distraction ruining what grace has accomplished", but on the other, he continued his message of encouragement by witnessing the "beautiful movement" of people engaged in "tracing and recovering so many Salesian stories".

With  the understanding that 'every saint shows a word of God', Fr Á.F. Artime finally exhorted everyone to persevere in their service: “Transmit and share all this, with the actors in the causes, in the dioceses and with the rest of the Salesian Family!”.

In this mindset, the General Postulation has already proposed some small possible steps to give continuity to the processes underway: in view of the 4th seminar, set for 2026, to hold online meetings every six months among all the animators of the Causes; and, on a spiritual level, to dedicate a moment of prayer every Saturday to entrust to Mary Help of Christians all the Causes of the Salesian Family, and in particular that of Mamma Margaret.
