Fr Mauchi's creations, especially the most iconic ones, such as those in which he depicted Don Bosco, are precisely depicted charcoal sketches, therefore in black and white. However, what emerged as a surprising discovery was the colour portrait of Don Bosco, which until then had remained in the shadows, hidden and unknown.
The face of Don Bosco in this work exudes serenity and joy, conveying an optimistic vision of the future. Contrary to many paintings in which the Saint looks straight at the viewer, here his gaze seems to lead towards a path of happiness, suggesting a way forward.
This discovery confirms Fr Mauchi's ability to capture the essence of the subject and to convey emotions through his portraits. Beyond words, his works speak of a deep understanding of human and spiritual nature. The artistic legacy of this talented religious will continue to live on, continuing his mission to inspire and uplift through art.
Coming from a family with solid Christian roots, Fr Mauchi was baptised in the historic parish of Santa Ana de Barrios Altos. His journey led him to the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, where he was confirmed by the Servant of God Bishop Octavio Ortiz Arrieta. His first academic steps were taken at the Salesian San Francisco de Sales" College and then at the Salesian Aspirantate at Magdalena del Mar, where he made his novitiate.
To complete his formation he obtained a degree in Literature and Plastic Arts from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. His versatility led him to become Editor of the Salesian Bulletin, Peru from 1962 to 1986. Included in his extensive artistic production is the portrait of Don Bosco, an image that has become a universal icon.
Don Bosco's black and white face has travelled the world and is one of Fr Mauchi's most recognisable creations. His sharp and subtle features capture the serenity and gentleness of the Patron Saint of youth.
Fr Mauchi's legacy goes beyond his artistic work. He was a teacher at the Salesian College in Breña, educating generations of young people. Among his passions were painting, sculpture, music and literature, to which he dedicated his free time.
Fr Jorge Mauchi, an exemplary artist and educator, leaves a legacy that will live on, reminding everyone of the beauty and lasting impact of art in our lives and communities.
