RMG - Rector Major’s visit to Salesian Family of Peru

11 February 2023

(ANS - Rome) - The Rector Major of the Salesians, Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, shall visit the Salesian Province "Santa Rosa da Lima" of Peru (PER) from February 13 to 20. This will be a time of animation and accompaniment that aims to promote the pastoral work carried out by the province.

Upon his arrival in the country, he will meet with the Sons of Don Bosco of Peru and carry out a series of other activities: on Tuesday, February 14, he presides over the Eucharist of the inauguration of Fr. Juan Pablo Alcas as the new Provincial of PER, which will be held in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Lima; the following day, he will visit the missionary community of Kuyuntza, in the Peruvian Amazon, where the Servant of God Fr. Luis (Luigi) Bolla lived and worked.

Moments of sharing and fraternity with young people will be spent in Lima and Huancayo. In Lima, at the Don Bosco House in Magdalena del Mar, he will attend the Meeting of "Don Bosco Houses" 2023, where all the boys and girls who are part of the National Network of those works, aimed at caring for the neediest minors, will gather. In Huancayo, he will celebrate the National Encounter of the Salesian Youth Movement of Peru, to accompany young people from the different nuclei of the country.

The whole Salesian Family will welcome with enthusiasm and joy the arrival of the Rector Major, who will visit and get to know the different realities of his works. For this reason, Fr. Manuel Cayo, current PER Provincial, has invited everyone to participate in these appointments to share the Salesian charism and the spirituality of Don Bosco with his 10th Successor.

Peru is currently going through a period of powerful social erosion and institutional, political, and social crises. The Peruvian episcopate has appealed for a remedy to the chaotic situation in the country - where there have been clashes with dozens of deaths in recent weeks - and has asked politicians for unity, honesty, and responsibility for the good of the people. "Institutions," the bishops said, "should be led by suitable and irreproachable people because our weak democracy can no longer endure instability." "Radical measures against corruption" and "an agenda of priorities that responds to the basic needs of the population, especially the poorest, and that guarantees the country's governability" are urgently needed.

Thus, today more than ever, the presence of the 10th Successor of Don Bosco invites everyone to continue to accompany the youth of Peru, especially those in extreme poverty, and represents a reason for hope and trust.
