Following the example of their founder, who has always been attentive to the neediest and most difficult cases, the Salesians not only have no intention of leaving the citizens of Burundi to their own devices, but on the contrary are planning a new presence so that it will be another oasis of education, evangelization and development in a reality that is in such need of these things.
The location identified for the new center is Kagwema, a town of 60,000 people at an altitude of 1,633 meters in Ruyigi Province, inhabited mostly by uneducated children and youth. It is a desolate place where infrastructure and services are lacking, and education even more so.
The goal of the Salesian project is to start with the construction of a parish church: a simple building that will represent the first, fundamental step, to bring the light of God's Word to those in need, which will be followed by the construction of an oratory to welcome the many children, girls and boys of the community who currently wander the dusty streets of the village, without a school to attend and a welcoming place to gather.
"Thanks to the work of the Don Bosco missionaries, we want to kindle hope for the people of Burundi and start a new work in the village of Kagwema," they say from "Missioni Don Bosco," the Salesian Mission Office of Turin, which has taken to heart the project of the Salesians of the "Africa Great Lakes" Vice Province - to which the Salesian works in Burundi refer - and is therefore sponsoring it with its benefactors.
The birth of this new mission will mean a new life for so many disadvantaged young people; it will represent for all of them a precious place where they can be welcomed, have food and water available, and all the love they need.
"We believe in a tomorrow of equality, justice and development for all, which is why we support with all our strength the new Salesian missions in the poorest countries," conclude the Salesians of the Salesian Mission Office of Turin.
