Spain – Salesians return to organize Easter youth meetings

08 April 2022

(ANS - Madrid) - An intense community experience of what is at the heart of Christian faith and life: the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of the Lord. This is what the Salesians want to offer to some 1,600 young people and families participating in the special Easter meetings prepared for this year. The improvement of the pandemic-related situation makes it possible to fulfill these celebrations with the usual canons.

In keeping with its pastoral motto, the Salesians of the "Spain-Mary Help of Christians" (SMX) Province present their Salesian Easter proposal as "Marked by Hope." "Every Easter encounter leaves a mark in us, especially if we encounter the Risen One," explained José Luis Navarro, coordinator of the SMX Faith Education Itinerary.

The meetings shall take place at the local level in various Salesian houses in the municipalities of Andalusia, Aragon, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Catalonia, Community of Valencia, Extremadura, and Region of Murcia. A website contains the material for this event, to which a total of about 1,000 participants have registered.

In the case of the Province of "Spain-St James the Greater" (SSM), the slogan chosen for the meetings is "Passionate in giving life", also in line with this year's provincial pastoral campaign. The expected participation is about 600 people and the meetings will take place, as in the past, divided into three age levels.

But it doesn't end here. The Easter program of the Salesians of Spain also includes other initiatives: there will be meetings for families and young people in Mohernando (Guadalajara) and Somalo (La Rioja). "The experience of bringing together families and young people generates a special richness because it mixes different generations and combines the freshness of the youngest and the experience accumulated by adults," explains Fr Xabier Camino, Delegate of Youth Ministry of the SSM Province.

Furthermore, the possibility of experiencing Easter along the Camino de Santiago is being offered. "The Camino, like life, is an experience open to the encounter; it asks for flexibility, leads to sharing with your group, but also with others, the many other fellow travelers that you meet at each stage. This is what we want to offer in terms of coexistence and Salesian spirit," adds Fr Camino again.

All Salesian houses will organize various activities for Holy Week. Parishes will gather thousands of people for the celebration of the Easter Triduum. Also, in Salesian environments, young people, educators, Salesians, and other members of the Salesian Family will be offered the chance to participate in activities such as spiritual exercises, retreats, and pilgrimages.

In some houses, moreover, there shall be representations of the Passion of Christ. Particularly noteworthy are those at the Salesians of Cadiz ("Gethsemane"), Seville-Trinidad ("Agnus Dei"), and Huesca ("The Passion"). And there’s more: 29 Salesian-inspired confraternities and sodalities will be holding their own Easter processions; among them: "The Donkey" in Ciudad Real; "The Holy Supper" in Alicante; "The Undressed" in Cadiz; "The Arrest", in Córdoba; and "The Penalties" in Malaga.
