Spain – "Putting passion and commitment into the things you do has a domino effect that infects those around you"

02 November 2020

(ANS - Madrid) - The Salesian style is once again very well represented at the “Educa 2020 Award” for the best teachers of public and private schools in Spain. This recognition, known as the "Goya Education Award" pays homage to the work of the great teachers who live and are happy with their work, educate their students throughout their lives, and put their utmost effort into the entire educational process, both inside and outside the classrooms. It is the families of the students who propose candidates every year and for 2020 there are five teachers from Salesian schools.

For the Primary School category: Gema Pérez, from the "San Antonio Abad" institute in Valencia, and Israel Cacheiro from "San Ignacio" in Cadiz. In the Secondary Education and Baccalaureate category: Lidia Borniquel, teacher of the Salesians of La Almunia (Zaragoza), Santiago Romá, of the "Juan XXIII" school of Alcoy (Valencia), and Juan Francisco Falcón, of the Salesian institute of La Cuesta.

The candidates' comments:

Gema Pérez: “This nomination makes me feel grateful, lucky and happy. I've always felt favored for having been able to fulfill one of my dreams, to teach, which for me is not just a profession. Personally, I think that putting passion and commitment into the things you do not only multiplies the results of your work, but also generates a domino effect that infects those around you.”

Juan Francisco Falcón: “I'm a lucky teacher to receive the recognition of my students, who are the ones who nominated me. As a Salesian educator, I can only thank God for the gift of having worked with them in the last year, having known their stories, overcoming confinement and difficulties with joy. In short, a huge gift.”

Lidia Borniquel: “What fills me with satisfaction is that the candidacy comes from my environment, from my children ... I think the most important thing is to leave a mark on them as Don Bosco did.”

Santiago Romá: “This is a recognition of all the work of the Salesian Institute 'Juan XXIII' in Alcoy. It's a way to encourage us and to tell us not to slow down.”

Israel Cacheiro: “The beauty of all this lies in the awareness that the work of a Salesian teacher goes beyond the classroom, it reaches the heart. This is where my methodology aims to make education three-dimensional (students, families and teacher), making oneself loved.”

The list of the 10 finalists in each category shall be published on 5 December and on 10 January 2021 the points obtained by each finalist will be published. The title of Best Teacher in Spain will be awarded to the teacher who will obtain the highest score.
