Papua New Guinea – "Empowering Youth": the final media seminar highlights Artificial Intelligence and film production

24 July 2024

Boroko, Port Moresby – July 2024 – The final session of the series of seminars on media education organised and coordinated by Fr Ambrose Pereira, SDB, Coordinator of Social Communications for the East Asia-Oceania Region, together with his team of volunteer facilitators, took place on 20 July. This session focused on Artificial Intelligence and practical video shooting activities. Over 60 participants from various Catholic schools and parishes in Port Moresby, who have taken part in the programme since the beginning of the year, took part in the event. The main session of the day was a presentation on Artificial Intelligence, facilitated by Fr Ambrose Pereira who focused on the definition of AI and its ethical implications for human beings, recalling that despite its usefulness it has a negative impact as it takes away creativity and critical thinking from humans. A session was then held dedicated to the Don Bosco Global Youth Film Festival (DBGYFF) competition, facilitated by a volunteer. The participants were presented with possible topics for the DBGYFF, and divided into working groups, each one carrying out a project. The presentation session of the films was honoured by the presence of Fr Gregorio Bicomong, SDB, Superior of the Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands (PGS) Vice-Province. In his address Fr Bicomong recalled how AI is conquering the world and the importance of using the media responsibly. He then judged and awarded the top three films based on creativity, quality, and plot.
