Brazil - Emergency in Recife moves Salesian province to solidarity
Recife, Brazil - May 2022 - Last weekend above-average rainfall in the Recife metropolitan area resulted in flooding and landslides, causing serious hardship to the population and the deaths of dozens of people, as well as a large number of displaced people. For this reason, the Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Archbishop Fernando Saburido, has launched an appeal to all parishes and religious organizations, placing Caritas to coordinate actions to support the population. Fr Francisco Inácio, Provincial of the Province of Brazil-Recife (BRE) equally called on all educational and religious communities in the Province to respond in solidarity. The first contributions came from individual Salesians and their communities. The commitment of religious in the campaign has been decisive in mobilizing parishes, radio stations, schools, and vocational training centers in favor of those most affected by the disaster. Yesterday morning, May 30, the Provincial delivered the first donations received to the Archbishop, but the solidarity campaign will continue in the coming days.
