India – Bust in honor of Fr Sylvanus Sngi Lyngdoh, SDB unveiled

Shillong, India - November 2021 – On 6 November, St Joseph Socio-Cultural Organization (SSCO) unveiled a bust of Fr Sylvanus Sngi Lyngdoh, a renowned priest of the Khasi ethnic group who died on May 28, 2016 at the parish of Laitkor, near Shillong. Mr. Lambor Malngiang, a member of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya, Fr Orphindro Lyngkot, the Provincial of the Salesian Province of Shillong (INS),  Fr Raphael Maiong, the parish priest and other priests were present at the ceremony. A well-known exorcist, missionary, writer, social and political thinker, Fr Sngi was born on 3 January 1921 in the district of Ri Bhoi. He made his first Salesian profession on 6 January 1948 and was ordained a priest on 1 July 1958 in Turin. Graduating with honors from the University of Calcutta, he continued his theological and biblical studies in Italy, Israel and Greece. In addition to having obtained a Master's Degree in Theology and a Master of Philosophy in Sacred Scripture, he learned various languages including: Latin, Italian, Spanish, French, Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. He was editor of the weekly "Khasi Ka Sur Shipara" for nearly two decades, starting in 1976. Fr Sngi was the author of more than 40 books and among his outstanding literary contributions are his dictionaries in Khasi-Hebrew, Khasi -Greek and Khasi-Aramaic. He also co-translated and edited the Catholic Khasi Bible, which is a fundamental work for the region.
