In the December issue of the Missionary Bulletin "Cagliero 11", a forum was also published with some data to learn about disability. Referring to the numbers indicated by the World Health Organization, "Cagliero 11" highlights that:
- About 1.3 billion people suffer from significant disabilities. This represents 16% of the world's population, or 1 in 6 people;
- Some people with disabilities die up to 20 years earlier than those without disabilities;
- People with disabilities often experience violence, prejudice, and obstacles in accessing health care. For example, people with disabilities find transportation 15 times more difficult and inaccessible than people without disabilities.
In the world - as already mentioned on the occasion of the publication of the statistics of the Catholic Church 2023 by Fides - the Church manages health, charitable and assistance institutions which include: 5,405 hospitals, 14,205 clinics, 567 Hansen’s Disease hospitals, 15,276 homes for the elderly, the chronically ill and people with disabilities, 9,703 orphanages, 10,567 kindergartens, 10,604 marriage consultants, 3,287 centres for education or social re-education and 35,529 other social institutions.
