The conference, organized by the Salesian Historical Institute (ISS) in collaboration with the Faculty of Theology at the same university, will begin with an introduction to the theme. Following this, five keynote speakers will present an in-depth analysis of Salesian evangelization in Latin America, Africa, and Asia from the post-World War I period to Vatican Council II.
Additional scholars and experts will then explore specific aspects of the Salesian missionary phenomenon. Topics will include:
- Missionary magazines
- Films on missions
- Missionaries who founded religious congregations and institutes
- Missionary museums
- Published historiography
- The lived holiness of Salesian missionaries
The conference will open and close with two high-profile addresses by distinguished speakers, whose names are yet to be announced. These will be delivered by the new Rector Major and the Councillor for the Missions, both of whom will be elected at the 29th General Chapter, currently underway in Turin.
Between 1919 and 1965, the Salesian missionary journey was both traditional and innovative, requiring serious academic study for better understanding and interpretation. It also calls for thoughtful reflection to guide present and future missionary work, remaining faithful to Don Bosco’s vision and attentive to the mission of the Church.
The 150th anniversary of the First Salesian Missionary Expedition presents a unique opportunity for celebration and reflection. This year of grace will be marked by the Salesian General Chapter, numerous jubilee events for the Salesian Family, and various missionary initiatives worldwide—including this significant conference in Rome.
