Ecuador – The Missionary Club of the Salesian Agronomic Institute Expands Its Social Commitment in Paute

(ANS – Paute) – The students at the Salesian Agronomic Institute’s missionary club has taken their service beyond the school walls. They’re not just helping out in their own school, but they’re also spreading love and support all over the Paute canton in the Azuay Province. They’re working hard to make sure everyone feels included and cared for.

Every Saturday, members of the missionary club dedicate their time to visiting the Antonio Granda Centeno nursing home in Paute, where they share moments of joy and companionship with the elderly residents from 8:30 a.m. until after noon. During these visits, they paint with the residents, play bingo, serve food, and assist those with disabilities in eating. However, beyond these practical tasks, what truly defines the students' service is the time they spend listening to and emotionally supporting the elderly, many of whom experience loneliness.

Testimonies

Danna Romero, a member of the club, has found the experience deeply enriching. “I have always felt the calling to serve, and I believe that the best work one can do is sharing with those in greatest need,” she says.

For her, the missionary club has been instrumental in following her vocation. “Serving at the nursing home in Paute has been one of the best things I’ve done; the love and wisdom our elders share with us are immense, and everyone should have the chance to experience that,” she adds.

Eduardo Parra, another student, emphasizes that this activity has helped him reflect on the importance of empathy and solidarity with others. “Understanding that there are elderly people who feel gratified just by having someone visit and listen to them has opened my eyes,” he shares. He also highlights the enthusiasm of the residents, who eagerly participate in every activity proposed by the young missionaries, expressing their happiness in simple but meaningful ways.

Service and Solidarity

Inspired by Don Bosco’s legacy, the Salesian Agronomic Institute has always emphasized the importance of forming young people committed to service and community care. Through these initiatives, students not only gain valuable lessons in responsibility and empathy but also actively contribute to the social development of Paute canton.

The missionary club’s work reflects the spirit of the Salesian institution, which seeks to educate with heart and promote values such as compassion and teamwork.
