RMG – SDB Provinces: The Province of “Saint Alphonsus Maria de’ Liguori” in Brazil-Campo Grande (BCG)

26 February 2025

(ANS – Rome) – At the request of the then Bishop of Cuiabá, Mons. Carlos D’Amour, the first group of Salesians arrived in Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso, on June 18, 1894. This group was led by the future bishop Luigi Lasagna and consisted of five young missionaries: Fr. Antonio Malan, Fr. Arturo Castells, Fr. Giuseppe Solari, cleric Agostino Colli, and coadjutor Br. Jean Ruffier.

The following year, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), who had just arrived, began working with the indigenous Bororo people along the banks of the São Lourenço River in the Colônia Teresa Cristina.

By the end of 1894, the Salesians launched their educational work, on newly acquired land, founding the São Gonçalo Institute in Cuiabá. For this reason, in 2024, the Salesian Province of Saint Alphonsus Maria de’ Liguori in Brazil-Campo Grande (BCG) celebrated its 130th anniversary.

Present-Day BCG Province

Today, the BCG Province operates in three Brazilian states: Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and the western part of São Paulo. To facilitate administration across these territories, the provincial headquarters was established centrally in the city of Campo Grande.

Salesian Family

The Salesian Family, a true expression of spiritual and educational unity, plays a vital role in the province. Inspired by Don Bosco’s Preventive System—based on loving kindness, reason, and faith—the Salesian Family transmits God’s love and salvation to young people.

The province includes 9 groups within the Salesian Family, ensuring that at least one member is present in every community. These include:

• The Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB)
• The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA)
• The Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary
• The Sisters of Jesus the Adolescent
• Members of Canção Nova

• The Past Pupils of Don Bosco: 165 active members in 8 communities
• The Salesian Cooperators: 184 members in 11 communities
• The Volunteers of Don Bosco: 16 members in 4 centers

Through their shared mission, these groups continue to expand the Salesian charism, working together to serve young people and promote the values of faith, education, and social transformation.
