20 February 2025

Fortaleza, Brazil – February 2025 – On February 11, Fr. João Carlos Ribeiro, Vice Postulator for the Cause of Beatification of Mons. Antônio de Almeida Lustosa, and Vicar of the Salesian Province of Brazil-Recife (BRE), presided over a Thanksgiving Mass commemorating the 100th anniversary of the episcopal ordination of the Venerable Salesian and Archbishop of Fortaleza. The ceremony was held at Our Lady of Piety Parish in Fortaleza. During the homily, Fr. Ribeiro highlighted three central aspects of the Venerable’s life: His deep love for the Virgin Mary; His dedication to the poor; His unwavering commitment to the Church. The celebration honored Mons. Lustosa’s virtues, including his humility, compassion, and tireless work for the needy. Inspired by the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he never hesitated to travel to remote areas, overcoming difficulties to be close to his people. Fr. Ribeiro also recalled that the Venerable Archbishop participated in the foundation of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) and the Second Vatican Council. Despite his high-ranking position, Mons. Lustosa renounced the episcopate and lived a simple life, detached from titles and material possessions. His legacy of love for the Church, the poor, and the Virgin Mary continues to inspire the faithful today.
