The association has a team of 9 employees and 40 volunteers and supports more than 40 families and 70 children.
On Saturday 1 February, the day after the feast of Saint John Bosco, the foundation stone of a new facility, the Lakou Bosco Village, was laid in front of 200 guests, representatives of families and partners of the Lakou Bosco Association, including Rose Berthe Sapotille, President of the Association, Arthur Massiet du Biest, Director, Bishop Philippe Guiougou, Bishop of Guadeloupe, Fr Jean-Marie Petitclerc, Vice-Provincial of the Saint Francis de Sales province of France and Southern Belgium, on which the presence in Guadeloupe depends, and Arnaud Duranton, sub-prefect.
Bishop Guiougou expressed his satisfaction with the presence of the Salesians in his diocese, which, he said, demonstrates the Church's support for the initiatives developed to help children and young people in disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
After the speeches by authorities, Arthur Massiet du Biest gave the floor to a mother, a father, an adult and a pre-adolescent who each in their own way told what attending Lakou Bosco had brought them. Particularly touching was the account of Pierrick, who has just turned 12.
The Lakou Bosco Village is a 280 square metre meeting place with several living spaces, including a large house with a living room, kitchen and a workshop for handicrafts, a ‘Lakou’ space (home, in local Creole), a sports field and two multi-activity rooms: multimedia space, work space, playroom, sports space.
The project will take several months to complete. The Lakou Bosco Village is scheduled to open in 2026.
