Spain - Opening of the centenary of the arrival of the Salesians in the Province of Palencia
Astudillo, Spain - February 2025 - On 1 February, the celebrations for the centenary of the arrival of the Salesians in Astudillo were opened. The foundation stone of the Salesian College of Astudillo was laid on 24 February 1923 and the canonical erection of the Salesian Community took place on 19 December 1924. In 1928 the Association of Salesian Cooperators and the Association of Mary Help of Christians were established, and in 1930 the Association of Salesian Exallivos. The Salesian presence in Astudillo must be considered one of Spain's emblematic missions throughout history. In 2011, the Salesian community moved to Villamuriel de Cerrato, where pastoral activities continued. The official opening of Astudillo's centenary was attended by more than 400 people, with Mass in the church of Santa Maria, presided over by Bishop Mikel Garciandía Goñi, Bishop of the diocese, and concelebrated by the pastors of the pastoral units and Salesian community priests. At the end of the celebration, a group photo was taken around the Monument to Don Bosco, which the town of Astudillo offered to the Saint of Youth 50 years ago, and which on the occasion of the anniversary the municipality renovated, cleaned and arranged, and which Bishop Garciandía Goñi blessed.
