RMG – SDB Provinces: the Saint Stanislaus Kostka Province of Warsaw, Poland (PLE)

05 February 2025

(ANS - Rome) - In the second episode of the ‘SDB Provinces’ column, conceived to illustrate various Salesian provinces around the world, the object of attention is the Saint Stanislaus Kostka Province of Warsaw, Poland (PLE).

The official beginning of the Salesian work in Poland was in 1898, in Oświęcim when the Salesians took over the ruins of the former Dominican convent and church and opened the first educational institution for boys, and soon afterwards a high school. It was this institution that became the Mother House of the Polish Salesians.

In 1919 the Polish-Yugoslavian Province was then founded, named after St Stanislaus Kostka: the date of the canonical erection was 27 November 1919, initially with the headquarters of the Province in Oświęcim, and three years later the headquarters was transferred to Warsaw.

In 1933, the Province was divided into two, and from it arose the new St Hyacinth Province in Krakow. This testifies to the dynamic development of the Salesian Society in our country; and the Salesians founded schools, ran orphanages and oratories.

Despite the fact that after the Second World War, practically the only possibility of pastoral work was the administration of parishes, the Salesian Congregation continued to develop dynamically. This is confirmed by another division: in 1979, from one part of the Saint Stanislaus Kostka Province in Warsaw, the new Saint Adalbert Province was established, based in Piła.

In the 1990s many educational centres, schools of various types and grades, dormitories, boarding schools, educational centres and oratories were established in the Province. The province also runs its own publishing activity. An important characteristic of the Salesian mission of the Warsaw PLE Province is also missionary commitment; and in the Province there is also the Mission Office, with headquarters in Warsaw.

Among noteworthy events:

Centenary of the Province of St Stanislaus Kostka 1919-2019. The central jubilee celebrations took place in Warsaw and Łódź from 18 to 20 October 2019, presided over by Rector Major Ángel Fernández Artime, SDB. 40th anniversary of the Salesian Mission Office in Warsaw in 2021
