Haiti - The Saint François de Sales Philosophical Institute celebrates its patron saint

28 January 2025

Port-au-Prince, Haiti - January 2025 – The Saint François de Sales Philosophical Institute in Port-au-Prince celebrated the feast of its patron on 24 January. The meekness, charity and gentleness of St Francis de Sales inspired Don Bosco to such an extent that he called the Congregation ‘Salesian’, in honour of the holy bishop of Geneva. The patron saint of journalists and writers, known for his humanistic and integral approach to education, has inspired many Salesian schools in the country, which emphasise the complete development of pupils and students through the Preventive System. This educational model aims to form not only educated students, but also balanced and responsible individuals, men and women for Haiti and the world. Teachers are encouraged to build positive relationships with their students, fostering a learning environment based on trust and respect. Such education embraces the whole person, that is, it includes all dimensions of the person: body, soul, mind and heart. At the celebration, the problem of education in Haiti was mentioned, because a rather large category of children have no access to education. Salesian educational institutions play a crucial role in guaranteeing access to education for disadvantaged children in Haiti by offering them free and quality education. At the vocational level, initiatives such as the École Normale Technique (ENTec) and others have recently been launched to improve the quality of vocational training in Haiti.
