South Africa - Salesian leadership formation for the Southern Africa Vice-Province
Johannesburg, South Africa - January 2025 - About 18 Salesians from Lesotho, eSwatini, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia gathered at the Bosco Youth Centre in Johannesburg from 15 to 19 January for a Salesian leadership formation meeting. The ‘Formation of Directors’ was led by Salesian Formation Africa - Madagascar (SAFCAM), Fr Camiel Swertvager and Fr Gerald Ukemeumoh. In the fabulous summer setting of the Bosco Youth Centre’ in the midst of beautiful and serene nature, the participants, both recently appointed Rectors (AFM) and soon-to-be appointed Rectors (ZMB) attended 3 sessions each day on Salesian animation and Salesian community governance. The event provided a valuable platform for a deeper understanding of Salesian leadership skills, philosophy and methods. A Salesian rector is called to be an effective spiritual guide and leader, promoting fraternal communion, animating not only the consecrated religious community, but also the broader ‘educational and pastoral community’ of each Salesian work. Interactive workshops and practical exercises were instrumental in helping participants internalise the principles of governance while remaining firmly rooted in the mission of serving the youth and the broader community of hundreds of young people and dozens of lay mission collaborators. Salesians also learnt and discussed how to maintain a balance between authority and fraternity. The programme has undoubtedly prepared the participants to face the challenges of their roles with greater confidence and commitment, ensuring that the spirit of Don Bosco continues to inspire their actions and decisions.
