The event brought together about 60 people, including Salesian and Church authorities and personalities from the economic and political world, along with Salesianum employees, benefactors and long-term supporters. Everyone participated with satisfaction in an appointment that represents a milestone in the development of the work, and that will see the work continue for about three years.

The changes that will be made are designed to meet the needs of young people: after more than 50 years of use since the last major renovation, the structural conditions of the wing of the building being renovated were no longer suitable for contemporary living standards and to meet the current educational needs of young people, explained the Provincial Economer for the Salesians of Don Bosco in Germany, Fr Stefan Stöhr SDB. "Structural changes and technical modernisation are necessary in order to continue offering young people real opportunities for an autonomous and responsible life in the future," he noted.

The Salesianum building complex, along the Sieboldstrasse, will be completely renovated in two successive phases, until the summer of 2027. The modernisation and reconversion of the rooms will be carried out without having to give up the existing living space: the central concern has been to preserve the 147 residential spaces currently available in the relevant part of the building – and to this end, since planning began in 2019, the conditions have been created to continue offering the necessary services to young people even during the construction phase - for example by renting new outdoor spaces.

The planned structural changes include the transformation of the current two and three-bed rooms with shared toilets into modern single and double rooms with integrated toilets. There are also community spaces and offices for educational staff – all, of course, without architectural barriers and according to the most advanced sustainability standards.

The overall concept aims to create an atmosphere of open, bright and friendly life for young people.

The Salesianum includes numerous settings and services – Oratory and Youth Centre, Chaplains, Provincial Headquarters, Parish, Publishing House... and is a second home for about 400 young people between the ages of 15 and 27. The centre's services are aimed at children, teenagers and young adults who are completing an apprenticeship or traineeship in Munich, go to school or attend a Vocational Training Centre and need special help due to social and individual challenges. All of them receive comprehensive support and expert guidance, in differentiated educational forms of accompaniment and assistance.

The restructuring project is financed with the resources of the Salesians of Don Bosco and with the support of a number of public and private institutions, including the German Federal Employment Agency, the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, the "Sternstunden e.V." charity campaign, and the Bavarian State Foundation.
