India – Celebrations for ten years of the Don Bosco YaR Aftercare-cum-Short Stay Home in Chennai

20 February 2024

(ANS – Chennai) – Don Bosco’s dreams are still relevant, alive and still making an impact. The Salesian Province of Chennai has been at the forefront of ministry for the Young at Risk for the last four decades and more through its “Anbu Illam” (Home of Love) project that specially caters to street kids. 16 February marked the 10th anniversary of its “Don Bosco Young at Risk Aftercare-cum-Short Stay Home” located in Chennai, the capital Tamil Nadu State in India.

Since its inception ten years ago, a total of 2125 boys and girls from risky and delinquent backgrounds have been accompanied and mentored, through skill-training programs, higher education opportunities and job placements both in India and abroad. At present 82 boys and girls are under direct care, accompaniment and supervision of this centre. These youngsters under the care of this centre are young offenders who are either orphans or semi orphans coming from the government juvenile homes.

This momentous occasion was solemnized by a special concelebrated holy Eucharist, presided over by Most Rev. Peter Remigious, the Bishop emeritus of Kottar diocese; Fr Don Bosco Lourdusamy, the Provincial; Fr Pichaimuthu; the Director, Fr M. Vincent Xavier, Founding Director; and the present joint Director of DB YaR ministry, Fr T. Vinoth, responsible for DB YaR Aftercare Home, and other dignitaries.

“This ministry directly transports me to Don Bosco’s times and helps me get into his shoes and appreciate his foresight. I salute this great Saint of the young for his noble vision and proactive mission for the transformation and accompaniment of the young at risk nearly two centuries ago. I feel honored to be playing my part in realizing this great dream as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Don Bosco’s dream at nine”, said Fr Vincent Xavier on this tenth anniversary.

The presence of Mr Mohandas, the Chairman of the Child Welfare committee and Mr James, the District Child Protection Officer, added value to the celebrations as they acknowledged and praised the tireless service of the Salesians of Don Bosco in favor of the poor and young, especially those at risk.
