The stable where John Bosco, as a child, gathered his neighbours for readings

In the lower part of the house at the Becchi, the rural house of the Bosco Occhiena family, there was a cowshed that became one of the favourite places in the house once the cold weather arrived.

Here, as he himself recounts in the Memoirs of the Oratory, while still a child, John used to gather his neighbours. In the long winter evenings they met in the stable to read works such as "I Pari di Francia" and "Le avventure di Bertoldo e Bertoldino".

This latter book, a humorous work that collected popular stories of the time, was probably donated to John Bosco by his first teacher, Fr Giuseppe Lacqua.
