Chile - A step towards sustainability: Salesian Agrarian School in Catemu builds terraces
Catemu, Chile - November 2023 - The Salesian Agricultural School at Catemu launched a terracing project in October, led by the Ceres Centre. These terracing projects represent an innovation in agriculture and an important step towards the sustainability of agriculture and rural areas. The day was led in the field by Roxana Lebuy, Director of the Landscape, Territory and Rural Development Programme at the Ceres Centre, who shared her experience and knowledge with the students. She explained that terracing is based on the transfer of a water harvesting technique inspired by nature, respecting contour lines to reduce erosion and increase water efficiency. This technique allows water to accumulate in the soil for longer, penetrating the deeper layers. It also increases the biological activity of the soil, which is essential for organic cultivation. Another key aspect of this project is the subsequent planting of mycorrhizal fungi on the terraces, which nourish the soil without the need for chemicals. This approach is a fundamental part of the Salesian school's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. The project will be developed in seven provinces of the region, and the Catemu Agricultural School will have the privilege of being the centre of action in its province. The Ceres Centre will supervise the project and train the students in all stages of the process.
