India - DBNF organises seminar on mental well-being of Young at risk
Don Bosco National Forum for the Young at Risk organized a transformative two-day seminar on 20 and 21 September at the Don Bosco Youth Animation Centre (DBYAC) Ennore, Chennai, for over 90 enthusiastic participants from the eleven Provinces of India. The theme, "Enhancing Mental Well-being of Young at Risk," ignited a powerful dialogue on nurturing the mental health of youth. The psychological services of Chennai Province Niraivagam facilitated the seminar. Fr Don Bosco Lourdusamy SDB, the Provincial of Chennai, welcomed the participants. Dr R. Thara, the Chief Guest, said mental health is not a destination, it is a process. The guest of honour Fr Thomas Santiagu SDB, the Provincial of Hyderabad, highlighted that spirituality and psychology ensure mental health enhancement. Dr. Shiva Prakash from SCARF, drew parallels between mental health and gardening, emphasizing the importance of fostering positivity in children and understanding the myriad factors that shape their lives. He stretched on the need to take care of mental health as a delicate plant, watering, enriching it with nutrients and ensuring the right environment for young people.
A compelling panel discussion featuring young voices - Kavianjali, Indukavi, Miguel, and Haridas - delved into their unique life journeys, offering invaluable insights into the world of young minds and their understanding of mental well-being. Fr Selvaraj SDB explored the realm of the Gen Z generation, illuminating their hyper-reality world and innovative psycho-social interventions.
On day two, led by Dr. Sr. Sheela, unravelled the mysteries of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the intricate connection between emotion, thought, and behaviour. Further discussions on Ikigai, the Japanese secret to a long and happy life and its fusion with CBT added depth to the transformative seminar. Fr Joseph Leo SDB ignited province-wise group discussion to spark collective action in the YAR ministry, fostering local, provincial, and national-level collaboration. The event reached its pinnacle with the DB YAR Awards and the launch of the "Healthy Mind, Healthy Life" campaign for 2023-2024, graced by Father Stanislaus Swamikannu SDB. The seminar left an indelible mark, inspiring all to nurture the seeds of mental well-being in youth, with the concluding remarks of Fr John Alex, the Vice Provincial.
