July for Salesians and young people of BSP was characterised by the second Missionary Expedition carried out by the Province with the Xavante peoples in the State of Mato Grosso. For fifteen days, 16 missionaries, led by Salesians Frs Rafael Galvão and Cássio Rodrigo, had a significant experience of self-giving and service, as well as strengthening ties with local communities.
“This expedition was a way to pay tribute to those who have been coordinating the Missionary Action Group (MAG in English) for two years. It was a way to motivate them and encourage them to return to the groups with even more commitment in their mission" the creator of the project, Fr Galvão stressed.
At the beginning of the expedition, during the blessings in the homes of Xavante families, the missionaries were able to admire the family harmony they found in the community. This sense of union and cohesion among the members of the tribe has inspired reflections on the importance of emotional bonds and the value of different cultures.
“Witnessing this family union has made us reflect individually on our lives. Living with and confronting how thins are for us in São Paulo, where everything happens at a fast pace, has shown us the importance of understanding and enhancing different cultures” said missionary Willian Augusto Geremias.
During the 11-day expedition, volunteers had the opportunity to share knowledge, learn from the ancestral wisdom of the Xavante peoples and strengthen bonds of solidarity and mutual respect. The cultural exchange offered all participants unique opportunities for personal and spiritual growth.
The missionary expedition to Sangradouro leaves a precious legacy of integration between different cultures and an inspiring example of fraternal encounter between peoples. The young missionaries returned to their homes with hearts full of gratitude and with renewed motivation for continuing their activities in the Missionary Action Group, bringing with them the richness of the experiences they had with the Xavante peoples.
The Salesian presence in Sangradouro in the State of Mato Grosso, has been engaged for decades in tireless work to transform the lives of young people and the local community. The story of this inspiring presence began over a century ago, when the Sons of Don Bosco realised the need to bring hope and development to this region.
Currently, the Salesian mission in Sangradouro continues to play an important role in the life of the community: it provides education, social assistance and evangelisation to the indigenous Xavante and the local population, and the Salesians also do not neglect a commitment to preserve the culture and identity of the native peoples.
