14 July 2023

Meruri, Brazil –  July 2023 –20 young students from the Salesian University at Araçatuba, the Unisalesiano, accompanied by seven educators and Fr Paulo Jácomo, SDB, Pro-rector of Pastoral Care, began a missionary experience at the Salesian Mission in Meruri on 3 July. During the visit, Fr João Bosco Maciel, Secretary of the Salesian Province of Brazil-Campo Grande (BCG), presented the history of the Salesian Mission at Meruri and the process of recognition of the martyrdom of the Servants of God Fr Rodolfo Lunkenbein and Simão Bororo, arousing great interest among the young people. The following day, the students visited the tomb of the Servants of God, accompanied by Fr Maciel, who carefully told the story of their martyrdom which took place in the courtyard of the Meruri Mission. In the afternoon, the young people led the festive oratory at the San Domenico Savio centre, a traditional activity of Salesian missionary presence, immersing themselves in the culture of the Boe-Bororo people. There were also sports activities with the young people and typical local dances. The following day, Fr Jácomo celebrated the Eucharist and presented each of the young university students taking part with a crucifix, as a symbol of the missionary commitment undertaken during the Meruri experience. This initiative of the Araçatuba Unisalesiano demonstrates the university's commitment to providing its students with experiences that go beyond the classroom, promoting a complete education and contributing to the construction of a more just and fraternal society. The visit to the Salesian Mission in Meruri will certainly leave an impression on the lives of these young people, who were able to experience the history, culture and faith of this missionary community.
