Poland – Metamorphosis of the Salesian Primary School in Wrocław

23 June 2023

(ANS – Wrocław) – The space around the building of the Salesian Primary School on Świętokrzyska Street in Wrocław has recently undergone a profound metamorphosis. On Sunday, 4 June, everyone was able to see with their own eyes the results of a huge work of building the school playgrounds and greening the environment surrounding the school. The opportunity for the opening was the great celebration organised for Children's Day, which is celebrated in Poland on 1 June, and which also involved the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland and past pupil from the school, Mateusz Marawiecki.

“I am very happy that after so many years, we have succeeded in creating a school that truly resembles a school of the 21st century” he said. I was able to see all the classes I used to go to. And that was an emotional moment. It's a really good environment.”

Sports, educational, cultural and recreational spaces, a sea of greenery and a structure entirely designed in the name of safety, the protection of creation and inclusiveness: all this now, in fact, characterises the Salez institute – the popular name for this Salesian school, in a way that has pleasantly surprised the entire educational community and that greatly raises the educational quality of the school and the possibilities of development for its students.

“I would like to congratulate the Salesians, who have created a truly beautiful learning environment for children and young people. And I wish all children and young people, given that here are the classes from the first to the eighth year, to realise their passions, so that future dreams can be bornhere, which they will then have to realise” Mr Marawiecki said.

The investment, financed by the State and the SalesianSt John Bosco Province of Poland-Wrocław (PLO), covered an area of 8,000 square metres and was not limited to the reconstruction of fields and planting. It was about creating an ecological space. Among other things, underground rainwater barrels with a total capacity of 45,000 litres were installed. An automatic plant irrigation system is connected to them. In addition, 36 trees and more than 5,000 low-growing plants and herbs were planted. A small pond with plants and a solar charging station for smartphones, grassy fields, an educational garden, a greenhouse and weather alert station have also been created.

The new sports infrastructure includes a football field, three basketball courts, volleyball/badminton/tennis courts and a running track for sprints and long distance, a trampoline, a skating area and grandstands. LED lighting was also installed and an amphitheater and summer stage were built, as well as a playground (slides, rides, climbing structures) for younger children.

In the meantime, an educational park has been created in front of the building, where visitors can see (and use) a whirlpool, water prism, Newton's pendulum, dendrophone, music pipes, rotating disc and underground conversation tubes. All this is completed by a parking lot, a “kiss & ride” area to allow the parents of the students to accompany their children more easily to school, a tactile path and walking lanes for the blind.

Jerzy Babiak, School Principal, concluded: “We are very happy to have this space and we are grateful to those who have helped us to realise this project. It was not easy. It was very big, very ambitious, but well thought out, and certainly this space will serve children and young people, and this is what we are happiest about…”

The celebrations for the opening of the Salez sports and recreational space – with musical and artistic performances, sports events and mass participation by the locals – have expressed all the joy of the local community for this significant renewal which will profoundly benefit all students, their families and the entire school neighbourhood.

To testify to all this there are numerous images and a video.
