Italy - Course of Delegates for Salesian Family of English-speaking Provinces ends

24 April 2023

(ANS - Turin) - With the Mass celebrated last April 20 at the Basilica Maria Ausiliatrice in Turin-Valdocco, the Course of Delegates for the Salesian Family of English-speaking Provinces concluded. Over the course of these five days, the Delegates were spiritually enriched by visits to the Salesian historical sites of Valdocco, Colle Don Bosco, Mornese, and Nizza Monferrato. These visits allowed them to engage with the history of the Salesian Family.

In outlining the service of animation and accompaniment in the Salesian Family, Fr. Joan Lluis Playà, Central Delegate of the Rector Major for the Secretariat for the Salesian Family, emphasized that "without others, the members of a given group cannot be themselves."

The delegates also had the opportunity to hear the words of Fr. Pascual Chávez, Rector Major Emeritus, who reflected more deeply on the "Charter of Charismatic Identity of the Salesian Family of Don Bosco." Fr. Chávez pointed out that "we are a spiritual Family and thus it is the Spirit that is the foundation of our mutual relations." He then emphasized that the Salesian Family "is composed of numerous brothers and sisters, each with his or her own personality, but all closely united with each other in fulfilling the Founder's mission and all animated by his spirit."

The last day of the Course was animated by Fr. Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General for the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family, who reflected on Holiness in the Salesian Family. Fr. Cameroni emphasized the following: "Holiness is the ultimate goal of our life and pastoral work. Holiness unites the Salesian Family, and without holiness, we impoverish the Salesian Family. Our holiness," he continued, "springs from the heart of Don Bosco. The sanctity of daily life makes communion flourish and generates relationships. Holiness represents the incarnation of the charism and helps to live the Salesian spirit in a realistic way," he concluded.

At the end of the last day's Mass, then, Fr. Joan Lluis Playà asked the Delegates what they will take with them after this experience. "Hope," "Love for Don Bosco and the Salesian Family," "The sense of family," "Gratitude for the gift of our Salesian vocation," "Optimism for the youth of today," and "The charismatic presence of Don Bosco in the world" were just some of the answers given by the Delegates.

Still others pointed out that after this Course they will value even more the dynamism of the Salesian Family, the greatness of the Salesian Family in mission and holiness, joy, and walking together toward the road that leads to love for Jesus, Mary, and Don Bosco. Finally, they wanted to emphasize how the richness of the Salesian charism is intended for everyone in the world.
