Brazil - Indigenous teachers receive update on Xavante literacy booklet
Campinápolis, Brazil - March 2022 - The Santa Clara Village in Campinápolis (MT) is one of the places where the Xavante Literacy Booklet, created by Fr Bartolomeo Giaccaria, SDB, will be used by teachers in the initial classes. On March 14, 40 educators from the village and surrounding areas participated in a presentation in the Xavante language by Fr Aquilino Tseré ub'õ Tsirui'á. The booklet is being presented in the villages of the Campinápolis region and was produced in collaboration with the Salesian Province of Brazil-Campo Grande (BCG), Operation Mato Grosso, and the Municipal Education Department (SEMED) of Campinápolis. The publication is the result of many years of studies and efforts in an attempt to find a literacy method better suited to the Xavante Culture. The first draft was written in 1958, then gradually improved, and in 1980, after the conference on Xavante spelling, all the material was corrected and brought together in two booklets. The editing and illustrations were done by Rubens Monteiro de Souza. An exercise book was added to each booklet, prepared by Domingos Mahörö'~e'õ, Rafael Hisé, and Rubens Monteiro de Souza.
