Honduras - Pilgrimage to Basilica of the Virgin of Suyapa
Comayagüela, Honduras - February 2022 - As every year, on February 3, Hondurans commemorate the discovery of the statue of the Virgin of Suyapa, Patroness of the Nation. The small statue, represented by an image of the Madonna carved on a piece of cedar wood just over 6 cm high, was accidentally found by a farmer on February 3, 1747, and has since become the Mother of all Hondurans and is venerated in the Basilica of Suyapa in Tegucigalpa; moreover, in 1925 Pope Pius XI declared the Virgin of Suyapa Patroness of Honduras.This year the Deanery of the Immaculate Conception and the Salesian parish "Mary Help of Christians" of Comayagüela took part in the pilgrimage to the basilica of Suyapa, thus resuming the activities interrupted due to the pandemic. All Hondurans participate in this national holiday, especially in this special year that celebrates the 275th anniversary of the finding of the Virgin of Suyapa, and for which a special Marian Jubilee began on December 8, 2021, which will end on February 3. 2023.
