"FM Dom Bosco" was born in 1997 as a community radio on the initiative of the then director of the Salesian community, Fr Sebastião Alves da Silveira. Just the start of the radio required a lot of effort and passion from its founder, parishioners, friends and inhabitants of the "Joaquim Távora" neighborhood and its surroundings. But it was only on 18 April 2001 that the Federal Senate granted authorization for FM broadcasting to the Salesian Educational Foundation. It was a dream come true.
In 2002, Fr Orsini Nuvens Linard took over the radio station; almost 10 years later, in 2011, new Salesians arrived in Fortaleza; they gave new impetus to the broadcaster. Today, the radio is directed by Fr Mauro Silva Pereira da José, and it has taken on a new and more modern profile: it has hired several collaborators, invested in digital equipment, reformulated the structure of the website and its presence on social networks, and it is increasingly headed towards a closer relationship between the radio's staff and its listeners.
As part of this path of ongoing growth and service to locals, a new transmission tower was inaugurated in Fortaleza on 18 August. For the occasion, after the recitation of the Rosary, the Vice-Provincial of Brazil-Recife, Fr João Carlos Ribeiro, presided over a solemn Mass - obviously also transmitted via radio. This was followed by the official inauguration of the new structure, which stands next to the church dedicated to “Our Lady of Mercy.”
The event was attended by the radio's numerous listeners and friends and of the Salesian community, several Sons of Don Bosco, the President of the Municipal Council of Fortaleza, Antônio Henrique, and other local authorities.
Today "FM Dom Bosco" stands out in the world of the State of Ceará with its educational, cultural, informational and religious programs that aim to provide listeners with quality communication. For this reason it is recognized and appreciated both by public bodies and by the thousands of people who daily follow the programming of the radio and the events it promotes.
