"As a child I dreamed of becoming a singer or actor. I wanted to become rich and famous. But above all I wanted to help my family. I have a fine voice. I learned songs quickly and I liked to sing and act like a superstar," says Bro. Sarorng.
But in high school, something changed. He received a scholarship from the Don Bosco Children Fund and he got to know some missionaries who aroused in him a little curiosity regarding religious life, even though he felt he "did not want to become a priest."
Out of a sense of responsibility towards his family he enrolled in an electrician’s course at the Salesian Technical Institute in Phnom Penh. At the same time he began attending the oratory and with his talent for music he became a good leader.
On completing his studies he worked for a year at the Catholic Catechetical Centre of Cambodia, working among young people: "My vocation began to grow," he says. But still he was not convinced. He wanted the approval of his parents and particularly the blessing of his mother who was not a Catholic. He received her blessing and continued the formation process. He joined the Salesian community in Phnom Penh and worked for the Don Bosco Children Fund, the same organization that years earlier had helped him in his studies.
Today is happy with the decision he made. "Every experience of working among young people and the poor makes me happy. Being able to help other people in my country is a joy that rewards me for the small difficulties I encounter in my vocational life. I have also learned to accept my formation out of love and I feel happy to belong to my community. "
And he concludes: "I opened my heart to God and listened to his call ... And I will do my best to fulfil my vocation as a Salesian of Don Bosco, as the first Salesian Brother from Cambodia".
