01 July 2019

(ANS - Nazareth) – One cannot carry out such an important and delicate service as that of guiding and accompanying the Salesian Congregation if care is not taken to always remain spiritually "in shape". In this perspective, and with the desire to share an occasion of fraternity and authentic community life, the Rector Major and the other members of the General Council began a pilgrimage to the Holy Land this past Saturday, June 29th.

After landing at the international airport in Tel Aviv, the members of the General Council reached the Salesian house in Nazareth on the first day. To accompany them, on this special occasion, is the Italian Salesian Fr Marco Rossetti, of the Faculty of Theology of Turin-Crocetta, of the UPS; who, in his greeting to the pilgrims, said: "Some of you have already visited these places, others reach them for the first time, but I am sure that we will all find novelties of messages, of teaching and, why not?, of emotion ... ".

Yesterday, Sunday 30 June, the itinerary included, among others, a stop at the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth and one at Mount Tabor. Furthermore, the members of the General Council, welcomed by the Provincial of the Middle East, Fr Alejandro León Mendoza, were also able to enjoy the hospitality of the Salesian presence in the city, formed by Salesians and Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.

Today, 1 July, the pilgrims are busy visiting Capernaum, with the house of Peter also; Tagba, which houses the church of the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish and the church dedicated to the Primacy of Peter; the Mount of Beatitudes; and finally they will cross Tiberias Lake by boat.

Jericho and Bethany will be visited tomorrow, 2 July, the day on which a meeting with Msgr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Apostolic Administrator of Jerusalem of the Latins, will take place.

In the following days they shall visit the Visitation Sanctuary in Ein Karen, and the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem; also Jerusalem, its Western – or Wailing - Wall, the Cenacle, the Garden of Olives, the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher ... Countless places will be visited to allow members of the General Council to listen more to the Word, to welcome it with devotion and preparing oneself for continuous conversion, for the encounter with Christ in the sacraments and in the brothers.

The pilgrimage will end next Sunday, 7 July, with a final stop at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, before returning to Rome.
