Belgium - Continuation of the Rector Major’s “Friendship Visit”

19 April 2016

(ANS - Dilbeek) - In his homily at Mass on Sunday, April 17, in the parish of Dilbeek, near Brussels, the Rector Major called his visit to Belgium and Holland a friendship visit.  During the Mass at Dilbeek the Rector Major also mentioned the continuous action of the Lord and the charism of Don Bosco, and the vocation of all the baptized to be Christian in faith and heart, to create open and welcoming communities, bearers of life.

On Monday April 18th, the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, continued his visit to the Province of Belgium-North and the Netherlands. The day started with a visit to Hechtel, the first house of Don Bosco in Flanders dating from 1896.

The Salesian community and the school board met the Rector Major in the community living room. They explained the mission of the house and then gave a more detailed explanation. Pupils and teachers gave a presentation of how the Salesian education project is actually lived in the school.

The Rector Major would not be hindered by barriers of language and started an open conversation. Fr Ángel showed a strong involvement and the conversation grew ever more spontaneous. The Rector Major transcended all knowledge and science by stating that we need to be and to educate good people in the first place. In a meeting with the pupils after lunch Fr Ángel became everybody’s friend in no time – showing his enthusiasm even in making a selfie.

After his visit to Hechtel, the Rector Major moved on to the Netherlands. There he opened the exhibition ‘Don Bosco 200, heart for youth and young people’ in St. Agatha. He also added an original handwritten letter of Don Bosco to the exhibition.

This special exhibition about his life and his legacy in the Netherlands ends the celebration of the 200th birthday of Don Bosco in the Netherlands. The exhibition was designed by the staff of the Heritage Centre in collaboration with the Salesians of Don Bosco. The exhibition is made up of images, pictures and movies, books, objects and archival documents from the collections of the Heritage and the Salesians in the Netherlands. It also exhibits many objects made by Salesian artists in addition to their work in youth work. A short movie gives an idea of the current Don Bosco youth and youth in the Netherlands. In the context of the exhibition, several other activities are offered such as introductions, tours and a concert.
