Democratic Republic of Congo - "You too go to my vineyard": Missionary Circle of Kingabwa

12 November 2018

(ANS - Kinshasa) - In Kingabwa, a district of Limete, near Kinshasa, a "missionary circle" has recently been established, a sign of the pastoral vitality of the new Vice Province "Africa Congo Congo" (ACC). The Missionary Circle has its headquarters in the premises of the Salesian school "St. Francis de Sales", but it is open to young people of other Salesian works who wish to be part of it. Its members are accompanied by the Salesians Fr Jean-Claude Mukendi and the young man in formation Cléophas Kikeluka.

The birth of the Missionary Circle of Kingabwa took place at the beginning of this pastoral year 2018-2019 and its members, in most cases girls, meet every Thursday at the elementary school dedicated to Saint Achilleo Kiwanuka, one of the martyrs of Uganda. Already in the month of October, the missionary month, the circle has had several important events:

  • On Thursday 4 October the missionary envoy took place. During the "good morning" thought, each member was called by name, received a special blessing by the laying on of hands and immediately after a missionary badge. From that moment on, the youths were sent to work in the Lord's vineyard to bear witness of His love.
  • On Thursday 11 October there was a day of reflection on the letter of Pope Francis for World Mission Day 2018: "Together with the young we bring the Gospel to everyone." On this occasion reflections focussed mainly on the areas where the Holy Father asks young people to be the bearers of the Good News to the "farthest ends of the earth", through the new techniques and means of information and social communication.
  • On Thursday 18 October, the first missionary initiative of the new circle took place: an expedition to several hospices and residential houses for the elderly located in the territory of the Salesian parish. Listening, comfort, smiles, shared time and prayers, together with the delivery of a large quantity of foodstuffs, other materials and an envelope of cash were the concrete fruits of the generosity of the youngest.
  • Finally, on Thursday 25 October, it was busy giving life to a day of reflection on the Missionary Circle itself: what meaning does it have, what is its purpose, the choice of the motto and a logo, its role within the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) as a platform for Salesian Youth Ministry ...

And for the near future many other activities and initiatives of spiritual animation have already been planned by the Spiritual Sons of Don Bosco. They say: "Although it has just been constituted, we dare to believe that the Don Bosco Missionary Circle of Kingabwa bears in itself the seed of a great missionary expansion, which will lead our young people to volunteer work and to concrete actions of charity, carried out with love and self-denial ".
