Peru – Continue to invest in training young people

01 March 2016

(ANS - Arequipa) - There are worrying data on the condition of children and adolescents in Peru. More than 120,000 teenagers are working instead of studying. Every day you can meet thousands of children working in the street. Some sell candy, others shine your shoes. The Salesians of Peru have chosen to change the lives of thousands of youngsters. Now after 33 years they have come together for a meeting in Arequipa, the city where the first Don Bosco House was founded in 1983.

The Dominic Savio House in Camana - Arequipa, was the venue for the ninth meeting of the young people and the teams that care for children and adolescents at risk. The meeting, held from 8 to 16 February, was attended by 100 people: 30 educators, including religious and lay people, and 70 young people from different Don Bosco Houses in all of Peru - from Arequipa, Ayacucho, Huancayo, Lima (Brena-Rimac), Cusco, the Quebrada Honda missions, Calca and Amparaes.

The strength of these meetings is the training and exchange of experiences among educators and teenagers from the Salesian works dedicated to children and adolescents at high risk. What is being sought is the strengthening of training and skills of educators on behalf of children; strengthening the life skills of young people; and, finally, the consolidation of teams that serve children and adolescents at risk through integration spaces and exchange of experiences, thus enabling them to unify the criteria for intervention. And during these meetings, topics such as social skills training, Salesian education, and socio-cultural animation are addressed.

The Salesians of Peru continue to focus on the education of adolescents. "You want to do something good?”  Don Bosco asked over a century ago. “Educate the youth." This is why 33 years ago the Salesians opted for this kind of experience.
