RMG – Don Bosco Past Pupils: a force that is organized

02 February 2016

(ANS - Rome) - "The education received in the past cannot be just a memory, but must become a force that stimulates the influence of the Past Pupils in the world, so that they can transform it and make it more human." So said the Rector Major Fr Ángel Fernández Artime to the Past Pupils of Don Bosco. "There are about 100,000 members worldwide. They are lay people who have taken on responsibly their task in the Church and in society, becoming light of the world and salt of the earth" says Fr José Pastor Ramírez, World Delegate for the Past Pupils.

The Past Pupils can be classified according to the degree of membership. There are four groups. First are those who have attended a Salesian environment, and are associated with and live the "educational charism of Don Bosco in the society as a project of life". The second group are those who live the charism of Don Bosco as a choice and a mission. The third and fourth groups consist of those who have attended Salesian environments, and see this as a grace and a fact of life. Fr Pastor Ramírez continues: “We provide an institutional and personal service to all those who have decided to live their membership as a choice, a mission, or a project of life."

On the occasion of the Feast of Don Bosco, the President of the World Confederation of the Past Pupils presented the Strategic Plan 2015-2021, which contains the main guidelines of the group of the Salesian Family with the largest number of members. "The goal of this group,” wrote Fr Pastor Ramirez, “is to create a worldwide network of people who can be 'salt of the earth and light of the world' in their daily lives."

Ángel Gudiña, World Vice-President of the Young Past Pupils, presented the Strategic Plan, on behalf of the President, Michal Hort and the entire Presidency, to the Vicar of the Rector Major of the Salesians, Fr Francesco Cereda.

The plan covers four projects that are significant for their originality and importance: the presence of a permanent technical secretary that guarantees daily service; creating a business platform to bring together past pupils who are entrepreneurs and professionals; the establishment of an Academy of Past Pupils, an initiative to unite all the proposals for education and formation; and a voluntary service for Past Pupils.
