For example, in Italy three students, Mattia Borgia, Andrea Domenico Mourglia, and Philip Patriotti from the Edoardo Agnelli Salesian International Institute in Turin were winners of the 29th Italian selection for EUCYS. This is the European Union Contest for Young Scientists promoted by the European Commission. Their project was "CardioID: Tell me how your heart beats and I'll tell you who you are". The three boys have developed a device that can make a person’s heartbeat the "password" that gives access to devices such as smartphones and tablets and protects sensitive information from cyber-attacks.
In Spain, there is great interest from both science and business in a sports jacket for cyclists designed by students Mark Andrés Sanegre and Aníbal Oreja and teachers Juanjo López and Sergi Llinares from the Juan XXIII Salesian Institute in Alcoy, in the Province of Seville. The product they made was presented at the national competition for the Don Bosco Prize. It is a "smart jacket", which although very light:
• provides security and visibility to cyclists, since it is equipped with a system that automatically alerts others, simply by monitoring the actions of the cyclist, of any braking, turns or changes in direction;
• records speed, temperature, humidity and the parameters of use of the bike;
• in the event of a fall, gives a signal of the location of the cyclist and starts using bluetooth to send an automatic call to the emergency services.
Finally, in Colombia, the students of the Salesian Technical Institute "Eloy Valenzuela" of Bucaramanga in the Colombia-Bogotá Province, have taken steps to ensure that all their school lighting is totally powered by solar energy. "The Salesian Institute is one of the few schools in the country that trains future electric and electronic technicians with a focus on alternative sources, especially solar energy," said Fr Deogracias Veloza, Director of the Centre.
